The Intel 8080 was an 8-bit microprocessor released in April 1974, five years before the IBM PC. It was the first commercially available microprocessor and was the predecessor of the 8086 and other x86 microprocessors.

The 8080 was originally developed as a successor to the Intel 8008, using the existing 8008 instruction set as the starting point. However, enhancements were made to the instruction set, including a better register set, adding instructions for bit manipulation, and others for floating point calculations. In addition, the memory addressing range was expanded from 8 bits to 16 bits.

The 8080 had a 20-bit address bus allowing access to 1 megabyte of memory, and a 8-bit data bus allowing for up to 256 8-bit registers. In addition, it had two 16-bit index registers and an 8-bit accumulator register, enabling powerful arithmetic and logical operations.

The 8080 was mainly used in systems with a single-user (or, at most, few users) such as industrial control systems, process control systems, scientific instruments and laboratory instrumentation, game machines, and early PCs. It was also used in many embedded applications and in some small, low-cost computers. It was also used in early home computers such as the TRS-80 and the Apple II.

The 8080 microprocessor was revolutionary in its time and led to the development of the PC as we know it today. It was the first in a long line of Intel microprocessors and its success was due in no small part to its ease of use and the flexibility of the instruction set. It allowed for a wide variety of development boards, software, and peripherals to be made available at relatively low cost.
